In the past all this visualization stuff was dismissed as nonsense, but it has become much more accepted recently. People who use it know that you really can create a clear picture of you at your ideal weight.  If you focus on this vision enough, your subconscious mind starts to accept it as what you should look like, and starts working to make it happen.  Now This may seem to make any sense to you but, whether you think it works or not, we all use this every day without realizing it.

One example of using visualization in a negative way is people who are overweight and firmly believe they will not ever lose weight. They will not tell you they believe this, but you can tell from talking to them that they have an image of themselves as an overweight person. People like this would not be able to accept weight loss even if it did occur.  If they managed to lose some weight, their subconscious mind will then work overtime to get them back to looking like their self image.  They don’t realize it, but people like this have actually programmed their minds to make it impossible to succeed in losing weight!  These people could never be successful at weight loss without changing the mental image they have of themselves.

Now here is the big secret to visualization. Psychologists have known something about the human mind for years: it cannot hold conflicting beliefs at the same time.  For instance, you cannot believe that you are an excellent speaker and a terrible speaker at the same time.  Also, things that happen that go against what you believe create conflict.  Using our speaker example, if you knew I mean absolutely KNEW you were a terrible speaker but you got up and gave a terrific speech, you would feel conflict inside.  Your mind would actually work to minimize your accomplishment.   You may have even heard people that have given good speeches say, afterwards, that they really are not very good at public speaking.

Practice doing your visualizations every day and many times a day, really every spare moment you have. Losing weight is important and you need to make the effort to break out of the negative cycle you are in.  When you can spend a few minutes in a quiet place to practice making your image more and more vivid and more emotional. This is easy for some people, but most of us have to practice quite a bit to get it right. One good technique is to find a photograph of yourself from the past when you were at your target weight and focus on that.  If you don’t have a photo like that, just cut a photo out of a magazine and paste a picture of your face onto it. Use any technique you can to make your vision more vivid and real.

Think of yourself as being at your ideal weight already. Visualize yourself being thin doing what you are doing right now. Create positive affirmative statements and memorize them, and repeat them to yourself often.  One example could be “I’m glad that I’m flexible, fit and slim”, another could be “I like being thin more than I like fattening foods”.  You will find that, over time, your affirmations will keep you from things that can make you gain weight. Eating fattening food will become less appealing and increasing physical activity will be a lot more enjoyable. The fat loss will not be fast, but it will be steady and, more importantly, you will visualization is working.  You will realize that by using visualization you can finally control your weight for the rest of your life!
