Russ got expelled from high school when he was fifteen years old and eventually found employment at a local machine shop. For the last three years he has gained a reputation as a hard-working and diligent individual who almost never calls off work due to illness.

The Likelihood of Getting Married

Around four-and-a-half months ago he started dating a young lady named Emma. They seemed to hit it off immediately and gave people the impression that they had a lot of good times together. In truth, they had such a close relationship that they began talking about getting married.

The Excessive and Irresponsible Drinking Begins

When Russ met Emma, he hardly ever drank. This situation totally changed when Emma and Russ began dating on a fairly normal basis. In fact, everything was going great until Emma called Russ one night around 4 AM and said that she had to call off their relationship and that she couldn’t explain the reason at that moment.

The next morning before he went to work, Russ went to Emma’s apartment and found out in an instant that Emma had already moved out. Russ took this very hard. In actual fact, he was surprised because they seemed to be getting along so well.

When Excessive and Abusive Drinking Leads to Problems at Work

So what did Russ do about Emma’s leaving? Rather than working through his pain and sorrow, he began getting intoxicated almost every night. It didn’t take long for his pals at work or for his supervisor to notice that Russ was coming to work late at least three times per week and that he continually called off ill. What is more, some of his fellow employees made an appointment with staff in Human Resources Department and mentioned that Russ often came to work with a noticeable smell of alcohol on his clothes or on his breath.

Russ’s manager heard about all of this from Human Resources and also from Russ’s co-workers. So one Monday morning he asked Russ to come into his office. He told Russ that he had recently noticed a clear-cut change in his attendance, sick time, behavior, and in his work performance.

When a Supervison Can Encourage a Worker to Get Help For His or Her Abusive Drinking

Russ’s boss also articulated that a number of his co-workers reported him to Human Resources because he had been coming to work with the strong odor of alcohol. His boss then stated the following: “Russ, your fellow employees are not reporting you to the Human Resources Department to get you into any trouble or because they dislike you but rather because they care about you. And I am concerned too. I don’t want to poke my nose into your affairs, but it seems very clear that you are displaying some of the obvious symptoms and signs of abusive drinking. Consequently, I want you to go and see someone in the employee’s assistance program to discuss your drinking and your depression.”

“Russ, I’m no physician or a psychologist, but I have seen many of my friends and relatives go through some very bad alcohol side effects. Not only this but I have also seen the signs of alcoholism first-hand in my own family. When individuals experience problems with drinking, these problems not only affect the drinker, but they also make an impact on his or her friends, co-workers, neighbors, family, and relatives.”

Russ admired his supervisor a lot and consequently followed through with his recommendation the next morning when he called and scheduled an appointment with a psychologist in the employee’s assistance program.

Russ Starts to Feel Personal Success, Happiness, a Positive Attitude, and Some Self Esteem for the First Time in Many Months.

Although Russ didn’t automatically feel any better or less depressed about the sorrow he still feels for Emma, he felt comfort knowing that his supervisor and his fellow employees cared about him and wanted what’s best for him. This gave him some psychological relief for the first time in a number of months and he frankly felt some hope that he would get back on track with his life. In fact, Russ started to feel happiness, a positive attitude, personal success, and some self esteem for the first time in quite a few months.

Russ Bolsters His Anger, Stress, and Time Management Skills

In addition to feeling better about himself, and and to a substantial degree due to the backing of his manager, Russ started to improve upon his time, anger, and stress management skills.
